HOW TO PROTECT YOUR BACKUP COPIES AGAINST RANSOMWARE?
Did you know that Dell's PowerProtect DD (aka Data Domain) has a feature to prevent modification or deletion of certain sets of files for a predetermined period? This feature is called Retention Lock. Retention locked files are read-only until their retention period expires. In the event of a Ransomware attack, if your backup server is compromised, or the Data Domain itself, the attacker will be unable to encrypt or delete your backup copies protected by Retention Lock.

Unfortunately, only a handful of specialized backup applications like Dell EMC Networker can leverage this feature natively. Customers using other backup applications are forced to create their own custom unsupported scripts in order to use that feature.

Here comes NASLORD, Retention Lock Manager

NASLORD has been developed to provide IMMUTABLE DATA PROTECTION FOR ANY APPLICATION.

NASLORD automates the creation of the Retention Lock copies on the Data Domain and the configured retention period will get applied by Data Domain. The copies are created very quickly using a feature called fastcopy. Since Data Domain deduplicates all your data, these copies consume very little disk space.

NASLORD also takes care of deleting the older copies, for which the retention period has expired.
